Facing the Giants..

Last Oct 10, 2015 The samaskom launched a seminar that would open the future graduates of ABComm entitled, Career Insight: PR and Digital Media Jobs for Communication Graduates. And a preparation on facing the real world soon. It’s not easy, it’s a little bit scary in pursuing of our dreams but this seminar gave us knowledge on how we can be competitive among others. But this will not be possible without the help of the alumni speakers, who shared their stories and experiences.

Here are the thoughts that caught my heart..

After graduation your luggage are empty, you only have your diploma (Im not saying diploma is nothing) You don’t have experience, don’t know where to start but according to Mr. Nico Reyes one of the speakers, Mass communication is one of the flexible course, so you can expand your options. In additional, Mr Jeremy Cortez said grades are not the one will identify what your future will be, same with what school you graduated,  It’s  about YOU! You’re the one who creates your future. So there is no reason to be afraid of what will happen after graduation. Be Confident enough. Everyone will face the real world, and everyone had to start from the bottom.

Lastly, Look for the one you love. Are you going to work in a big company? seating infront of a computer for 8hrs a day or You’ll stay up all night just to shout “action” for 100 times, or maybe you are willing to wreck your brain to edit those articles on top of your desk?  so choose the one you love, so that you’ll not easily get tired and give up. having the right choice last forever.

Be ready, Be prepared to face the journey of our lives. It’s a battle that’s everyone is a winner, you only get to lose if you will not try.

Comm-portable No More

Taking AB Communication was one of the easiest choices I made in life. Why wouldn’t it be? I loved writing and was forever fascinated with the world of media. But as I went through the course in the past four years, I learned that it was far harder than choosing it as my college degree. I had bad grades, even almost failing some of my subjects. Sometimes, I also felt bad about it, since some people thought that AB Com was easy. I feared that maybe this wasn’t for me.

Don’t get me wrong, though. Not once have I regretted being a Communication major. I also have long made peace with the fact that I may have disappointed my parents when I took a totally different path. If anything, the only thing that made me think twice about it was the stereotyping that every Communication major went through.

“Mass Communication. Mass Comm. Mass Comm-portable.”

It’s just that I hate how people think being a Communication major is “comm-portable”. I hate to think that this was the reason why I’ve disappointed my parents. And I hate to think that some of us took it because they were not skilled in Math, or had no other exceptional skills that applied to more ambitious fields, or simply had no choice.

And to be honest, the stereotyping really got to me to the point that I thought maybe I should’ve taken a straighter path. It made me wonder what was waiting for me ahead.

On October 10, 2015, my fellow AB Com students and I took a seminar on “Career Insights” for PR and Digital Media Jobs. Of course, the very focus of the seminar was us, the graduating class.

And if there was something I valued the most in the seminar, it was the fact that the people standing and talking in front of us during the seminar were once like us.

These people, whom I bet also experienced being boxed in the “mass comm-portable” category, were now talking to me about the future. They told us how it felt to be jobless for a few months after graduation, which was quite a scary thought for me. It was not an easy ride for these alumni, who were also quite impressive during their college years.

I’ve realized that it was more proof that it wasn’t indeed easy being a Communication major. We’re all the same, no matter what degree we’re taking. It’s never easy.  Now, it’s not so “comm-portable” anymore is it? Are you scared of the future yet?

No, don’t be! In the end, I learned that it wasn’t about the achievements and awards you’ve collected that was going to land you a great future. After graduation, it’s going to be another starting line. You’ll be bringing yourself back to the brink. No medal was going to lead you somewhere brighter. It’s all on you. So don’t be afraid for a fresh start! Go out of you COMM-fort zone! It’s going to be just fine.

What COMMes NexT?

Everything must come to an end. The only thing that we can do is to try and try until you got what you wanted. But what if there are a lot of obstacles or challenges ahead? What will you do? Are you going to raise the white flag and surrender or get down on your knees and pray to reach the finish line?

Every graduating student has this kind of fear that, Am I going to graduate? What if yes, what will the best job for me? What are the companies that will best suit my course taken, where should I go first? Should I rest for a while? Stay home and pamper myself from the things that I supposed to do when I was still studying?

Those are just some of the questions that will definitely pops up on your mind when we come to the point of receiving the “white paper” and “having a handshake with the president or head of the university”.

Well in this blog, I just would like to share my thoughts and learning’s from the seminar that I attended. It’s not just a typical and boring seminar that you’re thinking, because through this I was enlighten and eye opened with that question of “What COMMes Next?” That’s the thing, I don’t know where to go after this, what job and how will I maximize all those abilities and skills that I have. Like what is the best among the rest? In this seminar there are 7 speakers.

The one that strike me the most is the first speaker. He has shared his insights that I think I can maximize my course. He shared that in order to be a successful you got to have; Passion, Skills and Market. Why? Because through this you’ll get to know more of yourself and see what are your abilities. Life of a COMMunication student is not easy, especially it has different aspects but what’s a good thing about is that it’s for everything; this course has the different kind of job that you can apply. Well what’s the best line that Mr. Nico said? Is that all fresh graduates are equal to all companies whether you are coming from the provincial university or other. All you have to bring is that yourself and the confidence that earn. And remember not the INSECURITIES.

Also the best things that I learned is that the rest of the speakers have also shared their working experience on “working online”, they give us the opportunities and benefits that we can get on working online. It’s a bit crazy about social media, how powerful it is. But since I started the “writing for new media” class it changed me a lot, not in the usual way but in the fastest way.

It’s not too late for a new beginning, you can pretend that you don’t know but you can’ get escaped with it.

So as for you what will you do next? Take it or leave it.

Be the CHANGE you wanna be

Imagine yourself being well dressed with a little bit of make up, teased hair, holding a rolled paper, wearing a black toga with a matching graduation song in the background. Yes, the commencement exercise! This ceremony can actually give both terror and excitement, and putting together graduation announcements can often feel like an added stress, really!

With that said, our university has conducted some events like job fairs to extend help for providing options what profession we want to have after our exit. But, the question is, who would be “ME” upon entering the real world? Would I be able to use those teachings, what if no one wants to hire me and I’d just be a bum for my entire life? So, for us to be guided and have a glimpse the actual *thing*, we conducted a Career Insights: PR and digital media jobs for communication graduates, and invited our Comm alumni, and there were certain statements which were simple yet meaningful left in mind.

So let’s start with “Passion o Sweldo?”

After studying, you can’t be readily be a boss of your own company. Remember that you have entered a new chapter and this time you have to prove yourself because you are back to zero.

There are instances that you might get rejected for the post for certain reasons, but it doesn’t mean that you are not good enough. So if that job is not for you now, maybe tomorrow the next day, who knows. Let’s be realistic, this is not an excuse for you to be “COMM-portable sa bahay”, why not make yourself efficient, yes we understand that you want to be in front of the cam because this is your passion, projecting, but you will not be able to be on top if you will not start from the bottom, build your self. There are also practical people that they might choose a way that they were highly compensated but a far from that course that they took, keep in mind that you’re a comm. Graduate that specializes in communication so you have an edge to deal with different people easily. Which ever works for you.

“Masaktan lang kayo, aalis na kayo?”

In life, everything is balanced, there’s a good and bad day. You might be commended now and later be scolded. There’s always room for improvement and not be sensitive. They are giving you these because they want you to be your better version and you must consider them. Bear in mind, getting a long with people who have not the same way thinking as yours doesn’t mean you’re hypocrite, you are just civilized, be flexible.

"Complacency is your greatest enemy."

As time passes by and you have already established yourself, you will be having this feeling of security for all aspects, because you are considered as “tenured”. Changes are constant, what you know might be obsolete, so don’t be complacent, this may drag you down. Be prepared for the unexpected, have thirst for continuous learning, embrace changes.

These statements might not be enough for me to see clearly who would I become after college. But at least, with the experience that they have imparted, I know that there’s something more after reading textbooks, this time, I’ll be putting them into action and it’s up to me on how to do it. we have same dream, it’s up to us to own the trail to get there.

LIFE OF A COMMUNICATION STUDENTS AFTER GRADUATION

The AB Communication 4 of Angeles University Foundation (AUF) held an event at Professionals School (PS 517). The event is all about Career Insights: PR and Digital Media Jobs for Communication Graduates. The 7 speakers are AB/Mass Communication alumni who shared their life after graduation.

Here are the key learning that I learned from our 7 alumni speakers.

  • ·       According to Mr. Reyes, to have a successful career in life you must have the Passion, Skills and Market. If your passion is to become a newscaster go for it but your passion must connect to your skills. You must have the voice and confidence to be a successful Newscaster. After graduation you don't know where to apply jobs but if you have the passion, skills and market you will be successful.

  • ·       Ms. Mungcal said that, you should become honest in yourself in choosing a path in your life. She said that being a communication graduates is not easy because after graduation you don’t know where to apply jobs, but now she is a successful woman. She started in ABS-CBN and GMA but she is not happy to her career, she find her self in AirAssia.

  • ·       Mr. Tiotuico and Mr. Cortez said that, even their work is from home base, there are a lot of temptations. According to them, even their work is home base, they work 8hours or more. They give us to take care of our self and embrace the nature. They also told us that we should love our jobs because it’s not all about money.

  • ·       Mr. Gonzales and Ms. Navarro are content editor from BPO Incorporation. Ms. Magante is a Link Builder on BPO. I learned from them that being a content editor is not easy because you browse the Facebook all day. As long as they love what they’re doing they will be successful.

7 Things We Did That Completed Our Childhood

10:50 AM List It 0 Comments

By Karmina Palaganas

Admit it, you love being one of the 90’s kids. And we all remembered how it was like back in those days. No, we’re not dinosaurs yet. But before the generation that stared at smartphones and the internet all day, there were those who did silly, awkward things who thought they were the only ones doing it.

Don’t worry. You weren’t the only one who did them. In fact, we remember them all too well. Here are our favorites!

·         You used to think that the moon followed your car.

Was the moon being sneaky all those times? This was definitely one of those childhood mysteries that we never quite figured out until we took lessons about the Solar System. Blame your science teacher for spoiling the fun.

·         You used to swallow fruit seeds and get scared to death that a tree was going to grow in your tummy.

This was one of our favorite “uh-oh” moments. Come on, it was just watermelon seeds... until one of your tita’s said that you’ll be growing your own farm in your stomach. Thank you, tita for giving us one of our most memorable tummy traumas.

·         You had that one pen with 6 colors, and tried to push all the buttons at once.

If you had that pen, your childhood was magical. It was definitely a joy to have that six-colored pen. Then your brain said, “Hey! Here’s an idea! Why don’t you push all the buttons at once?” And you did!

No regrets, no regrets.

·         You'd put your arms in your shirt and told people you lost your arms.

And the fact that some of your friends never believed that you did wasn’t enough to break your kiddy-spirit! No kill-joy friend was enough to stop you from pulling the prank of the amputated arms.

·         You would restart the video game whenever you knew you were going to lose.

You just knew when you were the one on the bad end of a video game. And you weren’t going to let it ruin your record of high scores. Your savior? The restart button!

And can we all just admit that some of us still do this? Please and thank you.

·         You would wait behind a door to scare someone, but soon leave because they were taking too long.

Being the sneaky, little ball of awesomeness you are, you were always that friend who did it. But then again, that person you were trying to scare should’ve been at the door a few seconds ago. A few more moments pass and you realize that the joke was on you. He never came. Sad, right?

These few moments in life made our childhood the best! And if you did something that we didn’t, why don’t you guys share it with us?
